Membership to the Academy is open to any person, Zambian or non-Zambian, subject to the criteria that a person is elected as a member of the Academy for their distinguished achievement in the pursuit, advancement and/or application of science. The membership consists of Fellows, Foreign Fellows, Ordinary Members and Honorary Members.
In 2023, the Zambia Academy of Science has 47 members drawn from a wide range of specialisations within the sciences including but not limited to life sciences, engineering and technology, medicine and health sciences, mathematics, and social sciences.
A person shall be elected as a member of the Academy for their distinguished achievement in the pursuit, advancement and/or application of science.
A candidate for membership of the Academy is nominated once a year by three members of the Academy who have knowledge and understanding of the scientific work and significance of the candidate’s contribution to science, technology and innovation.
Nomination of members
A candidate for membership of the Academy shall be nominated once a year by three members of the Academy who have knowledge and understanding of the scientific work and significance of the candidate’s contribution to science, technology and innovation. The Nomination Form must be signed by the nominators.
The signed nomination form shall contain a citation by nominators, explaining why the election of the candidate to membership of the Academy would further the objectives of the Academy;
The nomination form shall be accompanied by a statement from the candidate indicating the contribution they will bring to the Academy and his/her willingness to be considered for election to membership of the Academy, together with a full curriculum vitae;
The signed nomination form together with the curriculum vitae and statement from the candidate shall be sent to the Governing Council through the Executive Director of the Academy.
The Governing Council shall appoint an ad hoc committee to evaluate the suitability of the nominated candidate. The ad hoc Committee will thereafter make a recommendation to the Governing Council.
The recommended candidate is presented to the General Assembly by the Governing Council.
